The Car Free Day will take place every Sunday at certain stretches of roads in George Town. Motorised vehicles, including motorcycles, are disallowed on these stretches from 7am to 5pm.

ou don't have to be a millionaire or a huge organization to start giving to the needy. All you need is a heart of an angel. Erina Law and husband Lawrence Cheah took the first step of bringing food to hungry children and their families last Saturday morning.

With a budget of RM 200.00, they managed to prepare food for 50 hungry individuals. They distributed the packed food at The Goddess Of Mercy Temple, in Penang where at least 40 elderly people was waiting for their arrival.

Erina said, "For some people, a meal for four may cost them RM200.00, but then again, when you can feed 50 people with the same amount, it really felt great."

Lawrence said it was about helping the poor and showing his children the need to be charitable to others.

Irresponsible dumping by rubbish collectors

Location: Diamond Vally Industrial Park, Penang

Rubbish collectors conveniently off load their haul of residential waste and wet waste into a rubbish collection site for industrial waste instead of transporting it to the main rubbish dump.

The rubbish collectors also took their time to segregate recycled items such as plastic bottles, cardboard, paper, metal parts which they drove away with and transfer waste they do not want into the industrial waste bins.

Sam Tan, a factory owner located nearby to the rubbish collection site said that this has been happening since 4 months ago, it may be due to the closure of Batu Maung dump site located in the island.

Tan said that at least 2 to 4 trucks off load their "unwanted" rubbish at the rubbish collection site near his factory daily and this has caused the area to be dirty and smelly.

The huge rubbish bins at the site are always full after their daily routine and has prevented factories nearby of using them.

CJ Jimmy Leow has written to MPPP via E-Pintas about this but has not receive any feedback as yet.

Five-Day 'Dancing to Connect' Creative Youth Workshop by New York-based Battery Dance Company - An International cultural diplomacy project that touches the hearts and minds of youth through dance

Dancer and Teaching Artist, Sean Scantlebury of New York-based Battery Dance Company together with Lorna Hoong, a Malaysian dancer from the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA) will be holding a five-day 'Dancing to Connect' creative workshop for teens in Penang, hosted by PEARL (Penang Arts Link).

The workshop in Penang has been made possible with support from the Fulbright Specialist program of the U.S Department of State and a grant from the U.S Embassy Kuala Lumpur, with the sponsorship provided by the Whiteaways Arcade and PPB Hartabina Bhd.

'Dancing to Connect' is a program that Battery Dance Company has been introducing all around the world as a mean to provide teenagers with the tools for getting in touch with the dancer within and choreographing their own performances.

It aims to engage international youth in creativity and team building through the American art form of modern dance. DtC was launched in Europe in 2006, Asia in 2008 and Africa in 2009.

Starting in January 2010 with just fifteen packets of food, Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) in Penang was initiated by Patsy Gooi, a long-time student of His Eminence Tsem Tulku Rinpoche and the outlet manager of Kechara Paradise Penang. Undeterred by this modest start, Patsy went the extra mile to look for more homeless clients on the streets of Georgetown.

Saya selaku Setiausaha Politik kepada Setiausaha Agung Parti Tindakan Demokratik (DAP) mengutuk dan mengecam hebat klip video "Sembang Rakyat - Kedai 1 Malaysia" yang boleh didapati di laman web Youtube.

Dalam klip video tersebut, yang merupakan hasil muatan naik pengguna Youtube yang bernama "Kawasaki9722", DAP didakwa bersekongkol dengan ahli-ahli peniaga Cina untuk menaikkan harga barang di negara ini demi menimbulkan rasa kemarahan rakyat terhadap Kerajaan Barisan Nasional.

Ini merupakan satu penipuan dan fitnah ke atas DAP yang bukan sahaja langsung tidak berasas tetapi berniat jahat serta berunsur hasutan.

Seperti yang sedia maklum, antara faktor utama yang menyebabkan kenaikan harga barang di negara ini adalah pengurangan subsidi minyak, gas dan barang keperluan seperti gula. Subsidi-subsidi tersebut merupakan kawalan Kerajaan Persekutuan dan tidak ada kena mengena dengan pihak lain. Di samping itu, syarikat yang mengawal industri gula pula adalah Felda, sebuah syarikat berkaitan kerajaan (GLC).

Faktor-faktor lain yang menyumbang kepada inflasi adalah kuasa pasaran antarabangsa yang berada di luar kawalan, dan juga ketidakcekapan dalam urustadbir ekonomi negara kita. Sebagai contoh, walaupun subsidi gas yang jumlahnya berbilion-bilion ringgit setiap tahun diberi kepada Penjana Tenaga Elektrik Bebas (IPP), tarif elektrik di negara kita makin meningkat. Bukankah tujuan pemberian subsidi itu untuk mengurangkan beban rakyat?

Satu lagi contoh polisi yang menguntungkan syarikat besar dan membebankan rakyat adalah monopoli beras, yang dikawal oleh Bernas, sebuah lagi GLC. Oleh kerana monopoli yang mengekang pasaran beras ini, hasilnya harga beras impot di Malaysia adalah lebih tinggi berbanding harga beras impot di Singapura!

Hakikatnya kenaikan harga barang dan inflasi berlaku kerana ketirisan dan kepincangan dalam dasar dan urustadbir ekonomi negara kita. Justeru, kebertanggunjawaban bagi masalah inflasi harus dipikul oleh Kerajaan Persekutuan dan bukan mana-mana pihak lain, terutamanya DAP.

Dengan itu, bagaimana pula DAP boleh dikatakan terlibat walaupun sedikit? Hipotesis sebegitu langsung tidak memasuki akal dan tidak akan diterima oleh rakyat Malaysia.

Kami percaya bahawa klip video tersebut adalah satu rancangan musuh politik DAP dan Pakatan Rakyat yang bertujuan untuk memecah belahkan rakyat melalui propaganda perkauman yang sempit. Berdasarkan kualiti terbitan klip video tersebut, jelas ia bukan terbitan sembarangan tetapi telah dibuat secara profesional dengan peralatan dan peruntukan yang mencukupi.

Dalam erti kata lain, klip video ini adalah angkara pihak-pihak tertentu yang mempunyai sumber yang mendalam dan yang sudah kekeringan modal. Satu-satunya cara yang tinggal untuk mereka adalah untuk menggunakan kaedah yang berbahaya yang bertujuan untuk menghasut dan mengapi-apikan sentimen perkauman.

Laporan polis akan dibuat pada hari ini, diikuti dengan aduan kepada Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia (MCMC). Kami berharap pihak berkuasa akan mengambil tindakan siasatan yang segera serta tindakan susulan yang sewajarnya ke atas penerbit dan penyebar klip video tersebut supaya tidak berlaku kekeliruan dan kesalahfahaman antara kaum di negara ini.

Anwar Ibrahim can be present during interviews of witnesses for the defence case in the sodomy trial, but he cannot participate by asking questions.

Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Justice Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah made the ruling this morning after hearing submissions from the defence and prosecution.

The prosecution had objected to Anwar's presence yesterday, just as interviews were scheduled to be held with former police chief Musa Hassan and former Malacca police chief Mohd Rodhwan Mohd Yusof.

The defence will now be able to interview 10 witnesses today in Anwar's presence, at the Jalan Duta court complex in Kuala Lumpur.

However, the list for today does not include premier Najib Abdul Razak, his wife Rosmah Mansor or Musa.

Who are the EO6?

Prema Devaraj, the sister of Dr Jeyakumar spoke about the condition of the EO detainees and described harsh situation that they had to endure in detention.

Jeyakumar Devaraj, PSM deputy chairperson M Sarasvathy, central committee members Choo Chon Kai and M Sukumaran, Youth chief R Saratbabu and Sungai Siput branch secretary A Letchumanan were initially arrested along with 24 others in Sungai Dua, Penang, on June 26 over allegations of 'waging war against the Agong'.

However, after their remand order expired on July 2, the PSM 6 were re-arrested under the EO and accused of attempting to "revive communism".

The authorities later said their detention under the EO was on the ground of their involvement with the Bersih 2.0 coalition for clean and fair elections, which the government has deemed an "illegal organisation".

The man behind the image of an alleged 'violent protester' that was splashed on the front pages of the country's major newspapers after the Bersih 2.0 rally on July 9 has stepped forward.

Speaking at a PAS ceramah in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, Abdul Razak Endut said that the alleged knife he was holding was a Malaysian flag and he was not throwing rocks at police. "When the FRU fired tear gas, I saw the wind blowing towards the demonstrators... I picked up the canister and tossed it to a grass field with the hope that the demonstrators would be safe," said Abdul Razak.

GEORGE TOWN: The National ICT Association of Malaysia (Pikom) should look into setting up an IT mall in Penang.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng made the suggestion after Pikom chairman Wei Chuan Beng said Pikom would have its very own IT Mall at Cap Square in Kuala Lumpur in July.

Lim said Pikom should look into establishing such malls outside Kuala Lumpur.

"What better place than Penang to have such a mall as Penang is focusing on science and technology and Bayan Baru and Bayan Lepas will become the hub," he told a press conference after launching Pikom's PC Fair and 25th anniversary at the Komtar Dome yesterday.

GEORGE TOWN: The Star Education Fair 2011 at the Penang International Sports Arena (Pisa) received the thumbs up from thousands of visitors impressed with the choices on offer.

The one-stop exhibition, which ended yesterday, featured 252 booths by 120 exhibitors from various local and foreign institutions offering undergraduate, postgraduate, twinning, diploma, certificates and distance learning programmes.

The foreign institutions were from Britain, the US, Australia, Russia, Singapore, Indonesia, India and Switzerland.

The event was attended by Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng yesterday.

RM 1.90 million compensation awarded to Tmn Kota Permai flash flood victims

The long wait is over. After fighting for justice and compensation for nearly three and a half years, the Tmn Kota Permai flash flood victims finally get a nod from JPP and its ministry for whooping compensation worth RM 1.90 million.

Bernard Cheen, the Tmn Kota Permai spokesman said that the victims are satisfied with the amount. He stressed that the amount compensated is to ease the losses the victims incurred for the past few years and no one is making any kind of profit from this settlement.

He praised the continuous effort put up by Tan Teik Cheng, the ex Adun of Padang Lalang and those who have helped to make this possible.

Jade Emperor birthday celebration at Pulau Betong

The Hokkiens and other devotees of the Thni Kong (Jade Emperor) at the little village of Pulau Betong celebrated the deity's birthday on the ninth day of the Chinese New Year.

The village mostly Chinese inshore fishermen families, came all out to celebrate and to offer their prayers last night.

The offerings to the Jade Emperor included roast pork and the must-haves such as ang koo (red tortoise buns), mee koo (red-coloured buns), huat kuih (prosperous cakes), t'ng tak (sugar pagodas) and sugar cane.

Danger lurks at abandon market

The old market located at Balik Pulau, Penang has been the town's icon for decades until the new market complex was build several years ago. The abandon market has been the home to drug addicts who get their daily dosage, according to several shop owners nearby. The premise is dirty and the roof is probably going to collapsed anytime.

MPSP fast response delights foreign investors

A call to MPSP to clear and trim thick bushes and trees by a Swiss factory located at Prai Free Industrial Zone was responded with urgency.

The section outside the rear of the factory has been left unattended for many years and has been a place for illegal dumping by irresponsible parties.

Due to the thick bushes and trees along the fence, it provides a good hiding place for intruders. Recently, some materials has been stolen by thieves who cut through the fencing.

Nearly 200 thousand devotees made their way to the temple at Waterfall Gardens in Penang during the eve of Thaipusam to fulfill their vows.

The colourful Hindu religious festival saw devotees from all over the country gather at the venue to carry out their spiritual obligations.

Like in the years before, some carried kavadis while many others had shaved their heads bald and carried the pal kodum (milk pot) to show their appreciation to Lord Muruga.

Waging war against encroachment

Teluk Kumbar is a small fishing village on the southern part of Penang Island which consists of nearly 200 inshore fishermen, mainly Malay and Chinese.

Teluk Kumbar used to be rich in marine life and making a living out of fishing seems effortless before the encroachment by commercial trawlers nearly 40 years ago.

Teluk Kumbar inshore fishermen share the same fate as their fellow fishermen from Pulau Betong. The only difference is the frequency of such encroachment has reduced in Pulau Betong due to frequent "community policing".

The inshore fishermen around the southern part of Penang have suffered abuses and threats from commercial trawlers and the authorities. Some inshore fishermen's boats were rammed because they took photos of the trawlers registration for reporting purposes. Some were challenged to fight at sea.

Commercial trawlers are prohibited by law to fish within the 5 nautical mile radius from the shores as the area is reserved for inshore fishermen. But yet, the invasion continues everyday and night.

In order to be invisible during the night, the trawlers encroach these fishing grounds without switching on their lights or signals.

This has caused serious accidents where small boats were dragged down because they accidentally cross the floating lines dragged by the trawlers.

Despite the presence of a Fisheries office nearby, the inshore fishermen of Teluk Kumbar have no high hopes of getting any kind of enforcement from the government agency. They said that the office by the beach is frequently used as a beach house for the officers' family during the weekend.

Tmn Kota Permai problems nearly over

The residents of Tmn Kota Permai, Bukit Mertajam, Penang can now see the light at the end of the tunnel with IKRAM declaring the structural damages on their houses were caused by the "nearby project" constructed about 4 years ago.

Bernard Cheen, the residents spokesperson said the compensation plans are "acceptable" and they are still open for further negotiation if required with JPP. But there is still an open issue on the flash floods compensation where JPP has offered a one time payment of RM 500 to RM 1500 for each home.

According to Cheen, the residents have endured lost of thousands of ringgit every time flash flood hit their housing estate. This is also blamed to the JPP project nearby. This time around, the residents seek assistance from the previous Adun from MCA, Tan Teik Cheng who has assured the residents to "fight until the end" to get justice for the residents and put a closure to this long pending issue.

Mohd Saifullah, an inshore fisherman from Teulk Kumbar, Penang is still waiting for a reasonable compensation from the owner of a commercial trawler. Saifullah claimed that the trawler had damaged his fishing net as it came too near to the shore. When approached by Saifullah, the trawler captain offered RM 600 as compensation. "I have lost 1,800 feet of fishing net due to this incident and the cost of making one this long is approx RM 3800.00, and without it I cannot go to the sea." he added. Saifullah who is the bread winner of the family said that he has lost the ability to support his mother's medical needs. She suffering from heart problem and diabetes.

20000 mud balls for Prangin Canal

A TOTAL of 1,500 volunteers from Hope International Ministries did not mind getting their hands dirty out of their concern for Mother Nature.

They went ahead to produce a record of 20,000 micro-organism mud balls in Penang.

It was believed to be the biggest gathering ever for such an event.

The volunteers were not only from all over Malaysia, but some even came from Singapore and Taiwan including foreign students enrolled in local colleges.

Those from the foreign countries were amazed by the technology used. According to them, they had never heard or made such mud balls before.

To ensure a speedy process, five mixers were used to mix the ingredients including soil and rice husk to produce what is called 'Beneficial Indigenous' micro-organism.

he event, part of the state's 'Cleaner, Greener Penang' initiative, started at 2pm at a car park near Komtar Walk.

It was jointly organised by Hope Penang, the state government and both local councils here with the cooperation from Hope International Ministries.

Sim, who is also the Pantai Jerejak assemblyman, said 5,000 mud balls that had already been fermented were the ones that were thrown into the nearby Prangin Canal.

Sim said he was grateful to Hope for its time and effort to ensure the success of the event.

The volunteers then proceeded to the canal at about 3.30pm and they had fun tossing the mud balls in. The technology is known to stop algae growth and break down sludge in ponds, lakes, rivers and drains.
