Penang International Halal Conference 2010

Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng launched the Penang International Halal Conference 2010 at a hotel in Penang on the 30th Jan 2010

Lim said the global Muslim population is upwards of 1.6 billion, which means that one in four people in this world are Muslims.

According to Lim, the halal trade is estimated to be in excess of US$2 trillion annually. However the halal trade in not limited to Muslims alone as non-Muslims can also consume halal products.

He added there is nothing unrealistic about Penang wanting a share of this trade. With a sizeable Muslim population in the country, with its proximity to teeming Muslim populations of neighboring countries, with an international airport, a seaport and adequate road and rail links, Penang can aspire to a share of the global trade in halal manufacture and products.

No such share will be possible without facilities for the practice of Islamic finance and logistics which is the broad topic of this conference.

No globally aware non-Muslim these days can afford to be unaware of Islamic finance. Looking at the way the global credit crunch has affected world financial markets and looking at how Islamic finance has been unscathed by the crisis, non-Muslims are interested in the subject.

In a press release by DAP Penang, Chow Kon Yeow DAP Penang chairman added that Zahrain should not allow political frustrations and Lim's refusal to endorse his decision to award the tender of the management of Bkt Jambul Golf Club to a RM 2.00 company to make baseless personal attacks and attempt to break up Penang Pakatan Rakyat.

When asked if the issue has any impact to the relationship between DAP and PKR in Penang, Chow assured that all is fine and never better.

Kek Lok Si traders cries foul over demolished stall

Lee Thoong Heong, a trader at Kek Lok Si Temple is unhappy that the state land office had demolished his store on the 29 Dec 2009 despite his appeal to the related authorities.

He said that the demolition is against the court judgment which indicated that a wall is to be build to separate the property of the new owner and his.

CJ Jimmy Leow wrote to Ng Wei Aik and Wong Hon Wai, Adun Komtar and Ayer Itam respectively to get a clearer picture on the matter.

According to Ng, he said Lee has occupied the portion of the state land (3 feet) in front of the land owned by the new owner and therefore obstructing the access of the land owner to their own land.

Ng added Lee occupied the state land which is a road reserve by erecting illegal structure on the state land without the state consent.

But as far as Lee is concerned, most of the "illegal structures" built by other traders along the path to Kek Lok Si are illegal too, but why was he the only one penalized?

He added that it is against the court judgment to demolish the wall. He further said that he will pursue to prove that he did not commit any offence and claimed that he is a victim selective prosecution by related authorities.
