Malaysian Insider KUALA LUMPUR, March 7 — Riot police fired tear gas at hundreds of people who tried to march to Istana Negara to protest the use of English to teach maths and science.
The demonstrators wanted to submit a petition to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong today to demand that Bahasa Malaysia be reinstated in schools for the two subjects.
Many Malay teachers and linguists complain that a six-year-old policy of using English has hurt efforts to modernise their mother tongue and to develop a scientific lexicon in Malay.
The protesters had marched through busy traffic for about half an hour after gathering at Kuala Lumpur's main mosque when police fired tear gas, causing them to disperse.
